Gov. Roy Cooper will make an announcement today about the rest of the school year amid coronavirus. What he says will have huge implications for high school sports.

We've been anxiously awaiting today. Not because it's Friday (I mean, every day feels like Friday these days), but because Governor Roy Cooper is going to tell us what the future holds for public schools in NC with the coronavirus.

Let me be clear, I have no inside knowledge on what the governor is going to say, but I do have the ability to read between the lines. If you look at the phased plan to reopen the state, which Cooper released yesterday, it's hard to see how returning to school fits into any of those first two phases. So reopening school, in my opinion, is unlikely.

Of course this has very direct implications for high school sports. Last month, NCHSAA Commissioner Que Tucker told us it was hard to see how sports can resume without school opening. It's also hard to see how sports can resume based on the phases Cooper outlined, at least any time soon.

We won't say it's over just yet, but we're down four runs, no one on base, with two outs in the bottom of the seventh and the last man in the batting order is at the plate with a full count.

It ain't looking good.

What's next?
The big news of the day comes this afternoon when Governor Cooper releases his plan for education. I'm not sure if we'll hear from the NCHSAA today too, but if he closes school for the rest of the school year, the NCHSAA's decision may be made for it. If spring sports and basketball state championships are indeed canceled, attention will quickly shift to the fall season.

The NCHSAA hosts its board of directors meeting next week, which I assume will be done virtually. We'll be monitoring that for any announcements too.

Also today, we're watching for North Carolina high school football alums to be drafted in the NFL Draft. None of them were drafted last night, but here's a list of NC players who hope to hear their names called before it's over. And ICYMI, I had an interview with former Millbrook & NC State player James Smith-Williams, whose name could be coming up.

Happy Friday!
