The NCHSAA crowned eight basketball state champions on Saturday. We had our team providing full coverage of all eight games.

About a year ago, we were preparing to cover the basketball state championships when high school sports in North Carolina came to screeching halt. COVID-19 shut down high school sports days before the 2020 basketball state championship games and co-state champions were crowned.

One year later, we are still in the midst of the pandemic, but this time we were able to hold the state championships. Things were not normal. Players and coaches were in masks, there weren't many fans in attendance, games were played at high schools instead of college arenas, and many of us in the media worked remotely. But the games were played, and that's what mattered.

Congratulations to all of the teams who won state championships. In this special edition HighSchoolOT Newsletter, you'll find tons of coverage from all eight state championship games. And don't worry, you'll still get my weekly newsletter on Friday morning.

SILAS DEMARY JR. GETS STEAL, LAYUP IN OVERTIME TO LIFT MILLBROOK TO 4A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP
Image

This was one of the wildest state championship games I've seen since I started covering high school sports in 2006. It was back and forth. Millbrook would make a run, then Ardrey Kell would build a lead. It looked like Millbrook was going to win in the fourth quarter, then Ardrey Kell came back and it looked like the Knights had Millbrook beaten.

Silas Demary Jr. has made a name for himself throughout the playoffs though, and the junior's Millbrook legacy went to a new level on Saturday. After Millbrook found itself down four points with less than a minute left in overtime, Demary tied the game at the free throw line with about 10 seconds left. Then, on Ardrey Kell's ensuing possession, he stole the ball from Ardrey Kell and scored a layup with 4 seconds left, which proved to be the game-winner. If you missed the game, you have to at least watch the last play.

WEDDINGTON DEFEATS NORTHWOOD FOR 3A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP, 56-47
Image

Weddington's athletic department has seen much success over the years, but until Saturday, it had never won a boys basketball state championship. Weddington defeated Northwood 56-47 in the 3A boys basketball state championship game.

The Warriors led Northwood 26-23 at halftime, and Weddington struggled to pull away much of the second half, but three-point shooting and free throws helped seal the win. Chase Lowe was named the Most Valuable Player, posting 14 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists, but three other Warriors were in double figures. Kyle Frazier scored 12 points, Brock Bowen scored 11 points, and AJ Cook scored 10 points.

FARMVILLE CENTRAL BREAKS SCORING RECORD IN WIN OVER HENDERSONVILLE TO WIN THIRD STRAIGHT TITLE
Image

When you score 98 points, you expect to win. That isn't always the case when you play Farmville Central though. In the 2A boys basketball state championship game, Farmville Central broke the state championship scoring record with a 113-98 win over Hendersonville. The previous scoring record was 101 points, set by West Rowan in 1999.

For what it's worth, the two teams combined for 211 points, another state championship record. That record was also set in 1999 by West Rowan and its opponent, Parkland.

Farmville Central has now won 4 state championships in the last 6 years, including three in a row. As a program, the Jaguars have won 7 titles all-time, something only four other schools have exceeded.

On Saturday, Farmville Central was led by NC State recruit Terquavion Smith, who nearly posted a triple-double with 33 points, 10 assists, and 9 rebounds. You're probably not shocked to learn he was named the MVP too.

WILSON PREP COMES BACK FROM 11-POINT DEFICIT TO WIN 1A TITLE OVER LINCOLN CHARTER
Image

Wilson Prep basketball coach Ant Atkinson was a Wilson legend for a comeback in a championship game before Saturday -- he scored 10 points in the final 39 seconds of the 2007 NCAA D2 National Championship game to bring Barton College from behind to win. Now he's done it a second time, this time as a coach.

Wilson Prep found itself down 11 points in the second half, but the Tigers fought back. They led by as many as 12 points in the fourth quarter, en route to a 66-58 win over Lincoln Charter.

It wasn't until 2018 when Wilson Prep joined the NCHSAA. This is the first state championship in any sport for the school. Senior Devyn Bullock was named the MVP with 13 points and 7 rebounds.

VANCE DOMINATES GARNER TO REPEAT AS 4A GIRLS CHAMPION
Image

Garner's girls basketball team was in the state championship game for the first time since 1978, but the Trojans ran into a team that had a chip on its shoulder from last season.

Vance was a co-state champion last season, and the Cougars wanted to leave no doubt about who was the champion this season -- and they didn't. Vance defeated Garner 74-38 in the 4A girls basketball state championship game.

Leah Barringer was named the MVP of the game. She finished with a game-high 32 points. Trinity Moreland added 15 points and 9 rebounds for the Cougars. Garner star Jerni Kiaku finished with 14 points.

JESSE CARSON DOWNS ASHEBORO 51-40 FOR FIRST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP
Image

Jesse Carson won the school's first ever state championship in girls basketball on Saturday, beating Asheboro 51-40.

Asheboro was ahead at halftime, 20-19, but the Blue Comets could not match the Carson offense in the second half. Senior Carleigh Perry was the leading scorer and rebounder for Carson, posting 19 points and and 9 rebounds. Ellie Wilhelm scored 13 points.

Asheboro was led by Diamond McDowell's double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds.

SHELBY PULLS AWAY FROM FARMVILLE CENTRAL FOR 2A TITLE
Image

Farmville Central's girls basketball team was one of the defending co-state champions from last season, but Shelby had never won a girls basketball state championship -- but that all changed.

After a 77-62 win at Providence Grove, Shelby is now the outright state champion in 2A girls basketball.

Three-point shooting gave Shelby an early edge. The Golden Lions hit five triples in the first half, but only led by one at halftime thanks to a 17-7 run in the second quarter by Farmville Central. But Shelby pulled away for good in the third quarter, thanks in large part to 12 points from sophomore Maraja Pass.

Pass was named the MVP of the game with after scoring a game-high 31 points and adding eight assists. And for the record, she already holds one Division I scholarship offer -- from Arkansas. I bet she has many more by next season.

IN REPEAT PERFORMANCE, MURPHY RUNS PAST PRINCETON
Image
Those of us who follow high school sports in North Carolina are used to dominant performances by Murphy in the football state playoffs, but the Murphy girls basketball team had an incredible performance on Saturday.

Murphy repeated as the 1A girls basketball state champion with a convincing 76-35 win over Princeton.

Junior wing Torin Rogers was named the MVP of the game with 22 points 10 rebounds. Senior forward Sarah Pullium added 22 points and 8 rebounds and was named the Most Outstanding Player.

What I'm Watching
The basketball playoffs are in the books, but our playoff coverage is only taking a temporary pause. This week marks the final week of the regular season for lacrosse and boys soccer teams across the state. We've issued playoff projections for both sports already, and they will be updated throughout the week. Official brackets are expected from the NCHSAA on Saturday. Download the HighSchoolOT app and we'll alert you when those brackets are released.
This week could also be quite a newsy week. The NCHSAA Board of Directors meets on Wednesday to vote on the realignment proposal, a new playoff format for the 2021-2022 school year, the 2021-2022 sports calendar, and the two-year football calendar. We'll be standing by for updates from the NCHSAA.

We'll also be looking out for postseason basketball awards, particularly from the N.C. Basketball Coaches Association. We're working on our all-state teams too, if you'd like to nominate someone, click here. Of course, you can also submit your nominations for basketball players of the year (and dozens of other categories) for HighSchoolOT Honors too.

Congratulations again to all the state champions. Have a great week!

Nick Stevens
